A new and old tradition

Years ago my mom use to take the time to make and roll the homemade sugar cookie dough. Then we would all stand around the kitchen bar and help cut out cookies. We would decorate and cover them with little cinnamon candies and sugar crystals. I remember it being so much fun.

Today I realized how much work all of that really was for her. Wow, I completely underestimated the time she devoted to making the dough, the patience it took to roll out the dough and work with each of us. She made us feel special and gave us each our own cookie sheet to fill up with our special ones.

Today we did that with the littles after a chili lunch with the family. We didn’t have their patience and devotion for the full time, but for the time we did have it….it was well worth it. Thank goodness my sister was here to give the patience for rolling out dough. I just didn’t have it. Thank goodness for Holly and her icing skills.

Little B enjoyed just pouring on the sugar and eating bits of chocolate while he did.

Miss Princess was the most devoted taking her time to help us ladies in the kitchen with rolling and cutting our each cookie.

Little C just came in when his cookie sheet was ready for him. Still, he was creative in his endeavor and tried his hardest at this “girly” stuff.

We even used the same type of cookie cutters that we use to do.

I believe this will be a new Sunday afternoon tradition before Christmas. I’m looking forward to it.

I always look forward to family time.

And I felt her with us all throughout the day….love that feeling.

Have a wonderful week,

Ashley

11 and 17

I said goodbye to my best friend, my mom.

11 years ago I cried and held her hand as I watched the machines lines go straight. A couple weeks before that I told her I loved her and she said, “Don’t cry.  I’ll see you later.  I love you more.”  Those were our last words.
11 years ago I watched my family sit around a table and make the hardest decision of our lives.  One that I question almost daily, for many reasons.
11 years ago I was amazed by the amount of people in the hallways and waiting rooms of that hospital.  All people who loved her.  Who loved us.  Who couldn’t believe she was gone.
11 years ago I stood accepting hugs and “I’m Sorry’s” by some of the most amazing friends, family, neighbors, and community members.  To this day I’m not a fan of hugs.  They remind me of her funeral.  I’m trying to overcome that.

17 years…..

17 years of the absolute most amazing mom there ever was, without a doubt.

17 years of her packing my lunch for school.
17 years of her making me try new things at dinner.

17 years of the best birthdays and holidays any kid could ever imagine.
17 years of Saturday shopping trips to the mall and Kohl’s.
17 years of room mom and soccer mom and PTO mom and everything mom.
17 years of piano lessons and playing to watch her smile.
17 years of Sunday morning organ playing and cinnamon rolls.
17 years of Friday night basketball and football games and slumber parties afterwards.
17 years of “I love you more’s” at bedtime.
17 years of 4-H fun.
17 years of hugs that were warm and will never be replaced.

17 years.

Today and every December 1st for the rest of my life I will do my very best to remember the 17 over the 11, or the 12, or the 13, or whatever that number may be.

Someone once sent me this in an email, “You can’t measure life in quantity but look at life as a quality thing.  There are lots of people who have their family with them for a very long time, but don’t have much in the way of a quality relationship nor are they fortunate enough to have what you and your mom had.  I’m sure you would agree that you and your mom had lots and lots of quality time.”

I certainly agree now.  In the beginning I might not have.  But I certainly agree now.

Another quote I was sent, “Mothers, since time began, have been the ones who give us our base, our sense of who we are….our shared identities….our strengths.”

Missing my angel mother,

Fab Five {4}

1) This week I am grateful for:
family dinners and celebrations.  We celebrated my sister’s birthday and everyone (minus my guy) was there.  It’s good to just get together.  Talk.  Enjoy each other’s company.

I am also grateful for my KitchenAid mixer.  Without it would have made today’s task of cupcakes for the big 2nd birthday party of my little very daunting and painful.  I made almost 5 dozen cupcakes and a triple batch of lime green icing!

2) This week I enjoyed:

taking part in our annual tradition of finding a tree.  We usually do this on December 1st trying to make that day as special as it can be.  However, this year the 1st falls on a busy day.  Lots going on…so we bumped it up to tonight.  We found the perfect tree.  It is resting in the stand in the mud room and waiting to fall so it can be plump and perfect….just the way we like it.

3) This week I learned:

that I can be alone and handle a mouse all by myself.  I’ve never had to before.  I never wish to again.  I am so glad that Michael is home.  He’s the best part of my day and the best thing that has ever happened to me.
4) This week I accomplished:

my second round of physical therapy…and received great news!  My hips are back in alignment…so the exercises and stretches have been working.  I don’t have to go again for six weeks AND he thinks when he sees me next that we may be able to discuss running again.  I’ve been given more exercises to do daily including planks, side planks, and reverse crunches.  I am not a fan of planks….but if that is what it takes to walk without limping due to back pain then I’m in.

5) I am looking forward to:

another family celebration and gathering tomorrow for the littlest little’s 2nd birthday.  I’m also very much looking forward to finding my mom’s old Christmas decorations.  A blog post to come covering those details later….
Gratefully yours,

Didn’t Stand a Chance

CAUTION: Not for the weak at heart or those who rodent feared.

Sitting on the couch.  Home alone.  I spot a furry ball walking leisurely across my kitchen floor.

I already knew the little turds were back.  I’ve seen their droppings.  I’ve cleaned up after them.  I’ve moved kitchen supplies around.  I’ve seen dead ones in sticky traps.  I’ve spotted them running across the mud room floor.

This one had it coming.

He took his own sweet damn time.  And I’ve had enough.  Shaking I screamed at Shiloh and asked her to get it.

She walked over.  Sniffed him.  Then walked away.

She’s worthless.

So I decided I was going to save his life and sweep him out the back door on the porch.  He was slow enough and I had time to grab the broom.

I grabbed the broom and he took off so I did the only thing I could do.  I screamed as loud as my mom would have if she had been here.  She HATED mice.

He froze.

And I smashed the crap out of him.  His little legs started to move again.  So I smashed at least a dozen more times until blood splattered.

And then I puked.

And now I’m so traumatized by the whole darn event that I felt like you should be as well.
Sorry for the detailed description and obvious visual.
But I basically wanted you to see how much of a bad ass I really am.
Feeling Feisty and Nauseous,

25 things for Christmas

Sorry for neglecting you lately.  I’ve been overwhelmed with life and let my blog go.  I promise to be better.  Promise.

Anyways…..

I love Christmas.

Who doesn’t?

I love creating new traditions, making old traditions new with the love of my life, and being with family during the holidays.

My mom loved Christmas.  I see her in everything that is Christmas.  I decorate with some of the very things she use to place around the house.  There are angels everywhere, literally everywhere during Christmas.  I can always find her with me, but even more so during Christmas.

Christmas 2 years ago!

Here are 25 things I would like to do this year for Christmas:

(List adapted from Defrump Me)

1. Create a Pandora station or iPhone playlist with our favorite Christmas songs.

2. On Thanksgiving afternoon, start a new tradition with the littles of making Christmas ornaments.  We can use them to decorate my dad’s tree or just something to take home for their own trees! Okay, so we didn’t do it this year.  But…we could do it any afternoon….right?

3. Participate in a local charity drive where we get a chance to give to others.  We use to do this every year when I was a kid and it was one of my fondest memories.

4. Movie night with favorite Christmas treats.

5. Have a cookie decorating party with the littles.  Mom use to always do this with us when we were kids!

6. On December 1st travel with my love to pick out our Christmas tree and then drive through Reynold’s to look at the Christmas lights.  (This will be our 3rd year to do this and it’s one of my favorites!) I think this year we’ll be bumping it up to the night before due to some other festivities and the 1st falling on a Saturday.  Still….a tradition just the day before.

7. Visit a living nativity scene.

8. Go on a train ride, particularly Polar Express.  (Thanks to Michelle for already setting this up!)

9. Decorate a gingerbread house.  (I’ve never done this!)

10. Visit the circle downtown to see the tree and take pictures with the toy soldiers.

11. Make a Christmas card for a soldier.

12. Decorate our Christmas tree while sipping hot beverages and listening, or even dancing, to Christmas music.

13.  Bake a Christmas treat and visit an older loved one who needs encouragement or cheer.

14.  Plan out my special New Year’s resolution and get everything ready.  (I already have it figured out and so excited to put it in action!)

15.  Write our New Year’s resolutions on a slip of paper and put them in our stockings.  Next year we can see how well we did with them!

16.  Go shopping for Christmas ornaments and buy a special one just for Mike.  We do this every year and although our tree may be filled to the max it’s something I absolutely love.

17.  Attend a Christmas play or musical production put on by a church.

18.  Make Christmas cards for friends and families.

19. Open a present on Christmas Eve with my guy.  Some day this will be new pajamas for the little ones.  I have some friends and family that do this and I just love having new pajamas for Christmas morning!

20.  Have a simple potluck Christmas party (maybe ugly sweaters?) with some of our best friends.

21.  Attend a candlelight service with Mike at a local church.

22.  Have a “favorite things” party with girlfriends or at one of our Girls Night Out events!

23.  Spend Christmas day with everyone we love.

24. Try out Christmas at the Zoo with just the two of us or all the family.

25. Avoid using gift tags but instead label presents with a picture of that person.

What are you going to do to make Christmas special this year?

Feeling merry and bright,

Fab Five {3}

Ok, so it’s not Friday.  It’s Sunday.  My blogging has been lacking.

Life is busy between school/work, meetings, and girls night outs.  I wish I could say I’ll blog more as the holidays approach but I highly doubt it.

1) This week I am grateful for:
medicine and treatment for a lovely chic in our life. and that my nephew, his momma, step dad, and sister were all NOT home last night when their neighborhood was traumatized with some sort of explosion.  Luckily they were all gone.  I’m even more grateful he was with us…. celebrating Movember apparently.

 2) This week I enjoyed:

gearing up for Relay for Life 2013!  I participated in the Local Summit and we had our first committee meeting.  Game ON I am ready to Shut Down cancer this year!

3) This week I learned:

that some on Facebook are too outspoken for my taste when it comes to politics.  Thank goodness there is an “unsubscribe from feed” button.  I just wanted everyone to vote.  Sure we probably won’t all vote for the same person, but I hope you did your civic duty and you voted!  However, just because you don’t get your way does not mean you should bash and banter the person that did win.  If you truly think it’s ok to bully and banter when your “vote” isn’t the winner…..then I think I should select the “delete friend” option instead.  It’s no wonder I deal with bullying at work.  Children are a product of their environment!
4) This week I accomplished:

my first round of Physical Therapy for my back!  I have homework for the next three weeks and he even said that some day I would be able to jog again!  Basically my pelvis sits higher on one side causing pain on the other side.  So I have a simple stretch to do that requires me laying half way off the bed.  Pretty easy.  And keep walking, keep working out, more ab work, and he even prescribed planks.  Not real happy about that!

5) I am looking forward to:

Well if I had actually done this on Friday I would have been looking forward to the weekend.  Now I’m looking forward to a busy week and preparing for the holidays coming up!What’s your Fab 5 List? Gratefully yours,

Fab Five {2}

Time to reflect on my week and post Five Fabulous things.

1) This week I am grateful for:
a home and supplies to get by that were never washed away by Sandy.
2) This week I enjoyed:

time with the littlest littles.  I got to watch a Halloween program at their sitter’s.  I enjoyed watching them do a little trick-or-treating.  My favorite part was an evening without their parents to fill them with sugar, party hard, and snuggle lots.

3) This week I learned:

That my guy loves me for me.  I didn’t really learn it.  I knew it.  But I was reminded yet again.  I’ve left my cell phone at home twice since school began.  He delivered it.  I had a slight panic attack that I lost my wallet this week.  It was in his dad’s truck.  He went and got it.  He’s constantly saving me.  I’ve learned he will always be there, with a smile, and maybe a shake of his head because he’s finally realized that I am a little crazy.

4) This week I accomplished:

the completion of my first extended evaluation at work.  I think it went quite well and my kiddo’s were active participants in the lesson which surely looked good, right?

5) I am looking forward to:

Relay for Life Summit tomorrow all day long.  I’m not really excited about getting up early on a Saturday morning, but I am pumped to get the ball rolling on next year’s Relay.  Link up!Upward Not Inward

Have a fabulous weekend!

Shout out to a Rambler

There are a ton of things I’m going to miss about living where we live.  We don’t have to move until after the first of the year, but I’m already getting pretty anxious about this big change.

There’s one friend, in particular, that I am going to miss like crazy when we move.  I know we’ll only be about 15 minutes away from one another….but I like being around the corner from her now!

The gal who led me to blogging.
The chic who has opened my eyes to all the highlights and fun that motherhood can hold.
The friend who encourages me through scripture and her wise advice.
The girl who runs her heart out and inspires me with nasty healthy smoothies.
The pal who can read a book in 24 hours, blog about it, then force me to download it and do the same without even knowing it.  (You owe me $13.90 for that immediate download!)
The pretty piece to our “double date” nights with our men.

Her laugh is contagious and her writing is extraordinary.

If you haven’t checked her out…you must do so now.  You won’t regret it.

Heidi @ Ramblings of a Farmer’s Wife and a Mommy’s Life

Read her story.  Follow her blog.  I promise you will giggle, maybe cry, but certainly feel encouraged to stay positive and take charge of each day like you own it.

Truly a Fortunate Gal,

Turquoise Tuesday

I adore fellow blogger Crystal Cattle and her obsession with everything turquoise, including cowboy boots.  She’s quite the blogger inspiration.  We have a few things in common.  We both love turquoise.  We both love boots.  We both love the country life.

One of her recent blog posts inspired me to do some hard core research on the next pair of cowboy boots I wish to own.  Just in case a certain someone might read this and want to purchase me a gift for Christmas or my birthday.  Or just because he loves me.

As she said in her blog post on boots, I highly recommend you to NOT like Country Outfitters on Facebook if you are easily tempted in buying new boots.  I have gained extreme self control on my spending habits so I’m able to look and not buy.  Now if I ever hit the lottery, then you can fugettaboutit.  That’s my new word. Fugettaboutit.

So here goes…..

My boot wish list:

That’s all for now.
Happy Boot shopping to y’all!

Whatcha got cookin?

Hey hey…..good lookin.  Whatcha got cookin?

This recipe on Pinterest caught my eye from Big Oven and I couldn’t resist.  I think I pinned it months ago and tonight I finally got around to making it.

Garlic Parmesan Crusted Pork Chops.  Super yum.  Super duper yum and delightful to the nostrils.

Ingredients call for:

4 1/2-inch think center-cut loin pork chops (local markets are always the best to buy from)
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon dried rubbed sage
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
3/4 cups Parmesan cheese, freshly grated
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup dried seasoned bread crumbs (Progresso plain or garlic and herb are my favorite)
olive oil (for shallow frying)
4 large cloves garlic  or just use minced garlic from the fridge
lemon wedges, for serving
parsley sprigs; to garnish

Notice there are several things crossed out.  I don’t typically add the extras on recipes unless I have it….and I know herbs can add some real flavor, but they just aren’t something I keep around.  I have basil and parsley, and that’s about it!  I’m definitely not squeezing lemon wedges over top and garnishing with parsley sprigs.  This isn’t the Palomino…it’s my little country kitchen.

Spread Parmesan cheese out (see paper plate).  Beat eggs with one tablespoon vegetable oil in another bowl.  (p.s. – I forgot the vegetable oil and still turned out okay.)  Spread bread crumbs in another bowl.

Next time I plan to buy grated Parmesan instead of freshly shaved.

My counter which is dirty and iPad ready on the Big Oven app.
Please ignore the mess.

Pat the pork chops dry with paper towels.  Combine salt and pepper (and sage and thyme if ya want to) and sprinkle generously over both sides of the chops, pressing seasonings into meat with your fingers.  This doesn’t gross me out, hopefully not you either.  Bread pork chops one at a time.  Dredge seasoned chops in Parmesan cheese, coating both sides completely, patting to adhere.  Then, using tongs, carefully dip both sides of chops in egg mixture, letting excess drip back into dish to ensure thin coating.  Finally, dip both sides of chops in bread crumbs, pressing crumbs with fingers to form an even, cohesive coating.  This gets really messy….that’s why there ain’t many pictures.
Place breaded chops on a wire rack set over a baking sheet if you’re a neat freak and super woman in the kitchen which allows coating to dry for about 5 minutes.  Or if you are me then throw them suckers straight in the frying pan that’s ready.
Oops…forgot.
Get your frying pan ready with some olive oil.
Toss in some real garlic (or minced garlic if you’re me) and let it get hot.
Remove the garlic best you can if you want.
I left it in….but I like garlic a LOT.

All the breading part can be done ahead of time….if you can think ahead of time.  I typically don’t when it comes to cooking.  If you do make sure to cover the chops loosely with wax paper and refrigerate for up to one hour or so.

The recipe calls for heating a large heavy-bottomed skillet over medium-low heat.  We have the pots and pans we were given for Christmas last year.  Nothing fancy.  Paula Deen style actually.  They work.

The two on top haven’t been flipped.
The two on bottom have.
I like my stuff crispy and sometimes even “burnt” but I’m weird like that.

When oil shimmers, add chops and fry 4 to 5 minutes on each side, until golden brown and crispy, or to an internal temperature between 150 and 160 degrees.  Drain on rack set over baking sheet (or if you’re me then drain them on paper towel on a paper plate).

Please don’t judge my fine china.

Then it tells you to transfer to a warm serving platter and garnish with parsley sprigs and serve with lemon wedges.  I’m sure that adds some “presentation” and maybe even some flavor, but I tossed my man’s chop on a plate with the sides and he was more than happy to try this new recipe.

I used the fine china for the main presentation.
Add a little corn bread, some hash brown casserole, and some broccoli and
 WAH-LAH dinner is served.

Please be aware that I’m aware that my pictures are less than amazing.  I shot it all with the iPhone 4S and I am not about to make my food like any more amazing than it already is because I then I would have all you freaks knocking on my door tomorrow evening for dinner.

And quite frankly, without a dishwasher or a garbage disposal I just can’t cook for more than 2 people.

Ask the man of this house.  Our deal is I cook and he does the dishes.  Now tonight I let him get buy because he’s working ground for the neighbors.  He snuck in to use a real plate before heading back out to sit in his big green tractor for the night.

P.S.  Either don’t look at the nutritional information if you’re dieting OR cut the chop in half like I did.  Corn bread should probably be eliminated too.  Oh hell…so should the hash brown casserole.  Just remember…small portions.

Now….get your butt in the kitchen.  (Then the treadmill….)

Your men can thank me later.

Contently stuffed,
